What will happen when you join a Balint Group? – an introduction
A Balint group is a reflective forum where doctors and psychotherapists meet regularly to explore the emotional and relational aspects of their work with patients. The primary goal is to deepen participants’ understanding of the doctor–patient relationship and to enhance their capacity for empathy, reflection, and professional growth.
During each session, one participant presents a patient case that has evoked strong feelings, uncertainty, or particular interest. The case is discussed not in terms of diagnosis or treatment, but with a focus on the interpersonal dynamics, the emotional reactions of the clinician, and the implicit communication between patient and practitioner.
Participants listen attentively to the presenter’s story and then share their thoughts, feelings, and associations. The group process—guided by trained Balint leaders—aims to create a safe and non-judgmental space where the group can explore different perspectives and emotional layers of the case. This reflective dialogue helps participants gain new insights into both the patient’s experience and their own professional roles.
You will be joining af group with participants from other countries, other continents and from another cultural background. It is often surprising how easy it is to make your self understood in a second language, so don’t worry about that.
During the conference you will be joining the same group with the same groupleader and participants. We strongly recommend the members of the group to join every meeting in their group.

What will happen in the Supervision Group for Certified Balint Group Leaders?
A supervision group for certified Balint group leaders is a reflective and professional forum where experienced leaders, each responsible for their own Balint group of doctors and psychotherapists, come together to deepen their skills and understanding. In these meetings, the leaders present and discuss challenges, dilemmas, and emotional experiences encountered in their role as facilitators of Balint groups.
The focus of the supervision group is not on the clinical cases themselves, but rather on the dynamics, processes, and emotional responses that arise in the context of leading a Balint group. Participants share situations where they have felt uncertainty, strong emotions, or particular interest in their leadership role. Through attentive listening and open dialogue, the group explores the interpersonal and emotional layers of the leader’s experience, guided by an experienced supervisor and maybe a co-supervisor
This process creates a safe environment supported by each groupmembers participation. We strongly recommend you as a member of the group to join every meeting in your group during the conference. You will be joining a group with participants from other countries, other continents and from another cultural background. It is often surprising how easy it is to make your self understood in a second language, so don’t worry about that.
