B. words: Misunderstanding and Transformation in BG

A few years ago, I had the idea of making a podcast about Balint groups for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Nearly five hours of interviewing left us with too much material, and it needed to be edited. To help with this process, the production team provided a ‘transcript’ of each interview session, produced by automatic audio transcription software which I am told is something like artificial intelligence (AI).
In these transcripts, the word ‘Balint’ proved unstable. Despite hundreds of occurrences, the software transcribed ‘Balint’ correctly only once. It repeatedly transformed it into other words.

A microhistory of “sitting-out/pushback” in Balint groups – often assumed standard, yet documented as a later innovation. Drawing on published records and oral history, the paper traces how a small facilitating intervention spread, became normative in some trainings, and reshaped how groups contain emotion.
